Hair loss is a common problem that is faced by many, that mostly comes with age. Androgenetic Alopecia is the commonest cause of hair loss in both men and women. It is commonly known as male pattern baldness. It is caused by a combination of 3 factors – Testosterone (the male hormone), age (after 20 years of age), and hereditary. It usually affects women later in life than men. Now let’s look at the common hair loss problems by both males and females.
Male’s hair loss
Male hair loss can start pretty early as compared to females, at the average age of 30 years old. It often starts with a receding hairline at the front of the head, and slowly to the back. This can be due to the male’s body getting increasingly sensitive to the male hormones called androgens. Genetic factors play to the extent that the scalp is affected. Stress and sexual frustration are also common factors that result in hair loss.
In humid weather like Singapore, most males especially tend to have oily scalp. Day-to-day shampoos might not be as effective in removing these oil substances from the follicles as compared to a scalp shampoo. As the oil substances start to clog the pores of the hair follicles, thinning of hair occurs. This process will then lead to hair loss, where hair eventually stops growing out of the clogged follicles, leading to permanent balding.
Female Hair Loss
Hair loss can often be associated with stress, dietary issues, vitamin deficiency, or genetic factors. However, studies have shown that women are more likely to face hair loss issues in the latter part of life, mainly after giving birth and during menopause. During these two occasions, hair loss is caused by the follicles’ response to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), namely known as loss of hormones.
Female tends to start with gradual thinning on the top of the head. Unlike males that show a receding hairline, females will notice that the thinning parts broaden instead. Eventually, they will turn to bald spots if no proper care is taken. Hair loss will then start occurring after the hair starts to thin, whether it’s through washing or combing of hair. If no proper treatments are done by then, there will be more severe hair loss and hair will no longer grow out of the follicles, leading to permanent balding.
Solutions to hair loss
A healthy hair follicle should have approximately 3 strands of hair per hair follicle. When symptoms of hair loss occur due to clogging of hair follicles or other complications, the hair starts thinning and the number of hair strains start to decrease. It is important to seek treatment before reaching the later stage.
